Winning the toss Sri Lanka Captain Lasith Malinga opted to bowl first. To the batting first New Zealand started a barely starting. Kusun Raitha picks 3 wickets for 44 runs and Captain Lasith Malinga gets 2 for 24 runs. Thisara Perera picks a wicket but it costs 42 runs. The statistics may be the proof of the destructive batting of the Kiwi batsmen.

To the target of 180 runs Sri Lankan opener Sadeera Samarawickrama scores a golden duck at 11 on the scoreboard. Then another opener Dickwella tried to make a defense with Kusal Perera. But both backed to the pavilion by 45 runs. Then Kusal Mendis and Thisara Perera tried to make a dream for the last victory. But both of them got beaten by 118.

Though Thisara Perera tried in this match too, playing an inning of 43 from 24 balls with 3 sixes and 2 fours. Then Sri Lankan inning came to an end at 144 in 16.5 over and lost the match 35 matches keeping 19 balls in hand. Picking three wickets each Lockie Ferguson and Ish Sodhi become the chief destroyer of the Sri Lankan inning.
