Cricket Sri Lanka declared that Dimuth Karunaratne is going to lead Sri Lanka in World Cup-19. Despite Dimuth Karunaratne was not in the ODI since 2015 but the selectors believe on him over experienced Lasith Malinga.
Confusion on the Sri Lankan Captain
Accordingly, Dimuth Karunaratne was doing well on the domestic cricket but dropped on the ODI series against South Africa. As a result, Sri Lanka lost to the host by the difference of 5-0 under the captaincy of Lasith Malinga. On the other hand, Dimuth Karunaratne brought the test series against the same opponent after defeated to Australia and New Zealand respectively. So Cricket Sri Lanka had to choose something harder.
Although fears about Karunaratne’s batting centered around whether he could score runs quickly enough, he mustered a strike-rate of over 90, as he made 165 runs at an average of 55 through the course of that tournament.
The news surely doesn’t bring happiness to Lasith Malinga., whose commitment to his position as captain saw him play a domestic match in Kandy as well. that was only 14 hours after finishing an IPL match in Mumbai, earlier this month. Though Lasith Malinga had led Sri Lanka to a World T20 trophy in 2014 and his one-day captaincy has produced abysmal results – the team losing each of the nine ODIs they have played under his leadership.
the alternate name for the captaincy
The third major option for the captaincy to the selectors was Angelo Mathews. Who has been Sri Lanka’s ODI captain in two separate series before. But he understood to have ruled himself out. His most recent stint at the helm cut short when he ousted following Sri Lanka’s Asia Cup exit in September. Mathews’ relationship with coach Chandika Hathurusingha had become incredibly strained following the player’s axing last year.
